Quad is a user on masto.quad.moe. You can follow them or interact with them if you have an account anywhere in the fediverse.

tired: blocking a single user based on their activity

wired: blocking their entire instance with them

@eal @quad he’s on quad.moe not anitwitter.moe

Quad @quad

@taiz @eal Your instance. Not mine. That's the silence list for octodon.social

@quad @eal fuck i didn’t even know instance owners could block other instances

strangely enough i was able to add anitwitter.moe to toodon?

@taiz @eal Silence just means they're hidden from public timelines. Not that they're blocked. You can find someone manually. But you won't see them on the federated timeline.

Also it's the opposite. I think ONLY instance owners can block other instances. Users can only block individual users as far as I know.

@eal @taiz There's a "hide everything", not block though.

But I don't know what the difference is.

@quad @eal i can’t find unsafe.space , is it down or is it somehow blocking the search feature for it?

@taiz @quad It has never even been a part of the federation. Tells you something about the nature of these blocklists.

@eal @taiz I guess that explains why I never see them around even though they're on blocklists everywhere.

If they don't even federate then that's pretty laughable

@eal @quad that means it’s not even about filtering the federation, it’s about trying to silence them for believing in free speech. smh

@taiz @eal That's how most of these LGBT communities operate. They often direct prejudice against anyone who doesn't specifically believe in their opinions or openly allow people to disagree with them.

@eal @taiz Femnazi and political communities can be even worse

@quad @taiz And I'm actually fine with that so long as you are clear about the goals of the instance. I joined a "general-purpose" one which later turned out to be a safe space. Sucks when you can't even see that someone replied to your post.

@eal wait what? even if i follow them?

@taiz If you follow them you see posts normally, but how would I know that I should follow them when I can't see them in the first place?

@eal considering jumping ship now, any ideas on how to do it?

@taiz Find an instance that fits your views. I'd suggest niu.moe, if I didn't start my own I'd have joined that.

Then just export your follows on octodon and import them on the new instance.

@eal how do i export follows? i'll probably just (finally) move to @quad 's instance

@taiz @quad It's somewhere in the settings, I don't use mastodon anymore so don't remember where exactly

@taiz @eal On the preferences page there's a Data Export tab

@quad done, how do i join your instance?

@eal @taiz I joined mastodon.social originally. But a couple days later controversy arose over the admin silencing/suspending some GNU Social servers.

So I started my own before I'd regret staying there

@taiz @eal unsafe.space isn't down afaik. But searching won't work. Searches only show things that have federated to the server.

@quad @eal it’s impressively dead though, last post was on the 25th

@taiz @eal That's the public timeline. We can't know if they just tend to set their posts to followers-only

@quad @eal thats pretty dumb. i’ll just add columns for them then so i can see everyone

@taiz @eal Stuff like this is the entire reason masto.quad.moe exists.

I don't wanna be stuck under some admin that's likely gonna block an entire instance that I wanna communicate with sometime in the future
